Vanessa Gray is an Assistant Teaching Professor in Political Science. She has been teaching environmental politics courses at UMass Lowell since 2002, and she began incorporating Climate Interactive’s World Climate simulation into her international relations sections in 2013.
Dr. Gray’s published work includes a journal article that examines patterns of violent conflict in Colombia’s wilderness regions. The fieldwork for her doctoral dissertation, back in the 1990s, offered her an unforgettable glimpse into the challenges that communities and individuals confront in the remote places where the world’s frenetic demand for resources is now focused.
“Climate change and glittering malls, Calcuttan poverty and sybaritic wealth, biotic impoverishment and economic growth, militarism and terrorism, global domination and utter vulnerability are not different things but manifestations of a single system.”
— David W. Orr, The Last Refuge: Patriotism, Politics, and the Environment in an Age of Terror, 2004
