Susan Woskie, PhD, C.I.H., is a professor in the Department of Public Health and director of the Occupational and Environmental Hygiene Program, which is a NIOSH Training Grant supported Masters and Doctoral program.
Dr Woskie teaches courses in Environmental Health and Occupational & Environmental Hygiene. Her research has focused on exposure assessment for occupational and environmental health studies, the use of biomarkers of occupational and environmental exposures and disease, evaluations of exposure control interventions in a variety of industries and environments and assessment of the effectiveness of multifaceted home-based educational and environmental interventions to reduce childhood and adult asthma, resulting in over 115 peer-reviewed publications. In both occupational and environmental health, the impacts of climate change and the need to develop sustainable systems of agriculture, transportation, energy and production are increasingly important. The CCI initiative is an exciting opportunity to work with faculty and students in an interdisciplinary approach to the issues of climate change and sustainability that face our world.
Dr. Woskie has worked in Thailand since 2006 when she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Mahidol University. Since then she has returned to Thailand regularly and in collaboration Mahidol University opened the Mahidol/UMass Lowell Center for Work Environment Nutrition and Development (CWEND) which began receiving NIH funding in 2010. In 2015, CWEND received funding from the NIH Fogarty International Center as one of seven worldwide GEOHealth Hubs (Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hubs). The CWEND GeoHealth Hub is currently focused on improving agricultural health in Southeast Asia and sees the need for sustainable systems of agriculture as a part of the solution. In 2017, Dr Woskie received an honorary doctoral degree in occupational health & safety (PhD honoris causa) from Mahdiol University in acknowledgement of her research and training efforts in Thailand.
